♥ CWS Styling Equestrian Theme: "Annie Oakley, an American Cowgirl" ♥

by Becky Kénaan

Cowboys have certainly gotten much attention and fame in both movies and pulp fiction over the years, but what about the cowgirl?

As early as the 19th century, pioneering women also learned their way around a lasso and a horse on the American frontier.

One such American Cowgirl legend was Annie Oakley

She Rocked!

Annie Oakley was born Phoebe Ann Moses on August 13, 1860, in Darke County, Ohio. She is remembered as one of the iconic women of the early American West. Annie was known as the world's best sharp shooter and had beaten every man that had ever challenged her.

Annie was even nicknamed "Little Sure Shot" by Chief Sitting Bull because of her excellent marksmanship ability. "Ugh! Me like'm feathered bonnet. You want'em trade?"

Whether she was shooting with a pistol, rifle, or shotgun,  Annie was a dead shot. Annie also performed on horseback. Her horse's name was Target. "Ah! So that explains why she never had a target on her back!"

Audiences were dazzled by her talent at the Buffalo Bill's Wild West Shows. During her performances, she would shoot off the tip of a cigarette while it was being held between  her husband's lips. I would call that the ultimate in trusting your spouse!  HA!

"WAIT!! Back Up that Video!  I SWEAR that I just saw "JANET BRINK!"

Hmmm?

Back to my Blog ...Anyway, Annie even entertained such royals as Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm II (and also shot a cigarette out of his mouth as well).

She could even hit the thin edge of a playing card from 30 paces and shoot distant targets behind her back while looking into a mirror.

The Cowgirl apparel that I am wearing is authentic to the Annie Oakley period in American History when woman rode horseback across the dusty Plains of the Western frontier.

As was customary at the time, the long skirts and boots protected her legs from the sage, the weather, as well as mosquitos
and horseflies along the trails.

A light cotton blouse was worn on warmer days while a scarf was worn to protect her eyes, nose and mouth from the dusty trails and the cold.

The wide-brim hat kept her cool in the summer months, shaded her eyes from the harsh sun, and protected her face from the rain and snow on incremental days.
