CWS Styling Theme: Charlie's Angels "Roller Derby Queen"

Charlie's Little Angel On Wheels
by Becky Kénaan

Charlie’s Angels was a TV series about a wealthy mystery-man (Charles Townsend) who ran a private detective agency using three beautiful detectives.  These women were used in various and difficult situations.

The show was widely popular.

It became known as “Jiggle TV" by it's critics who believed that the show had no intellectual substance and that the actresses dressed to showcase their figures and sexuality as a sole means of attracting viewers.

The style that I chose was based on one of Charlie’s Angels undercover assignments.  It was an episode that revealed much of this sexiness involving the sport of "Roller Derby."

I chose the character of Jill Munroe, played by Farrah Fawcett in the first season of Charlie's Angels (1976–1977).

Jill was the sporty and athletic angel.
She was frequently depicted coaching kids' basketball, playing tennis, swimming, bowling, skateboarding, and rollerskating.

Jill was definitely the tomboy typecast. But she was also shown on model magazine covers.

In one episode, Jill took roller-derby skating lessons to join a roller derby team as part of a murder investigation.

It was called Roller Derby Queen (“Angels On Wheels,” 1976).

Few sports have captured the American imagination quite like Roller Derby and it proved to be an exciting novelty.

In addition to its uniqueness, the roller derby  sport further provided Americans with one of their first opportunities to witness women compete under the same rules of play as men.

Televised theatrical roller derby games were started back in 1961.  It originally consisted of the Northern Hawks (sometimes billed as the Chicago Hawks), New York Bombers, Texas Outlaws, Detroit Devils, Los Angeles Thunderbirds (nicknamed "T-Birds"), and Philadelphia Warriors (sometimes billed as the Eastern Warriors).

This blog pays tribute to this very physical, wild and sometimes zany sport.

Farrah always had such beautiful and teased feathered hair (similar like I am wearing). Her curled layers were the hairstyle sensation of the 1970s and the look is still popular today.  I also wore a safety helmet with both knee and elbow pads for protection when I am skating and jamming with the other Roller Derby "Wives”

I felt that the tutu would be fun and sexy to wear on the rink to best express my femininity.  I also wore my "Becky da' Boop" flirt shirt to give the guys a few nice "winks" as I roller skate past them on the rink.

Oh, pardon me for a moment, please.
My boss, Sunrae, wants to speak with me (again):
Sunrae: "And, just where young lady, do you think you are going headed off in that ridiculous skating outfit of yours?  Don't you realize that you have a styling event to attend to?  This is NO time for playtime, Hunny Bun!
Becky: Hello Boss!  Well, this is my styling outfit! Pfft!
Becky: "OMG!  Why are you acting like a 'derby virgin?' I am a bit rushed... I need to leave for the "bout" very shortly."
Sunrae: "I am no 'virgin' I will have you know! Pfft!!!...Err, I mean 'derby' virgin."
Sunrae: "Pfft! A Derby? OMG! You sound just like a 15 yr-old high-society girl at her coming out party for a horse-race in Kentucky."
Sunrae: A 'Bout'? That certainly sounds like a redneck term to me. “It’s 'bout time y'all git yer butt on over to the runway lake. Them thar boys’ll be bitin’ early!”
Becky: "Oh, Ma'am, just wait until you see the game! You can "hip check" to knock another girl on her ass or form a Jam!  It is way cool!!"
Sunrae: "A hip check? Get real would you!! It sounds more to me like a conversation between you and Bell trying on skinny jeans in our backstage dressing room. I will allow nothing of the sort! Not good, Ms. Kénaan!  Besides, Bell bruises easily."
Sunrae: "And a 'Jam?'  Get over it!  You know how much dieting and exercise it takes to be a model! Jam is just a delectable topping for toast. Strawberry is my favorite, btw."
Becky: "Heavens no, Ma'am!  A jam is a 2-minute countdown period during which both teams form 'packs' to score points. Many jams come together to make up a bout. Why, you can even punch your opponent. Get it?"

Sunrae: "Well, Gawd! That sounds like a massive group of fierce, angry, hungry, very scary wolves and NOT very lady-like at all!"
Becky: "Not at all, Ma'am. A "pack" is just a massive group of fierce, angry, hungry, very scary, and very sweaty girls performing."
Sunrae: "Let's be frank shall we?  Personally, I see very little difference between that and your modeling, Hunny Bun."
Becky: "Well, just like modeling, it is very demanding.  They call us "Derby Wives" because of our devotion to train and compete. Why, it is also a great way to relieve stress, too!"
Sunrae: "Well, all of that doesn't sound like much fun and too much busy-work for me. I have no time for such nonsense!"
Sunrae: "Aside from running Classic with Style, I am busy either cooking my partner's meals, bringing in slippers, giving nice shoulder massages, or ironing underwear."
Sunrae: "Pfft! I could NEVER devote myself to both my Partner AND Roller Derby at the same time!"
Becky: That's too bad, Ma'am. Except for the dentist bills, it is an awful amount of fun!
Sunrae: "Hmmm? And you said that I can punch people too? "
Becky: "Yep!  And, it's all legal!"
Sunrae: "On second thought, where might I sign up for roller derby skating lessons, Becky?"
