Rompers began as children's clothing in the 19th Century Victorian era.
In many ways rompers were the first modern casual clothes for children.
Being light & loose fitting for play and mobility, they were a major departure
from the more restrictive clothing children wore during the Victorian period.
While primarily a play garment, some French children also wore dressy rompers.
The vintage playsuits of the 1940s were worn primarily outdoors –
either at the beach to catch some sun or for sportswear.
The main style of playsuit was a one-piece romper.
The top resembled a button-down blouse that would tuck in at the waist and
extend into shorts, cinched or belted at the waist and separated top from bottom,
giving it a nautical look which remained popular through the 1950s.
Most vintage playsuits were made of cotton, although some could also be found in rayon.
They were brightly colored and often done in patterns, checks and plaids.
Floral & Hawaiian prints were popular towards the end of the decade.
Fast forward, the romper is definitely back in style.
