UniQue Boutique's "Karen in Sparkling Blue” Dress: To Bling or Not to Bling?

I received this fabulous “Karen in Sparkling Blue” multicolored sequin dress from Pussycat of UniQue Boutique the other day. I decided to see how I could to best accessorize it without going overboard.

This lesson offers an interesting styling conundrum for anyone considering this type of dress to wear out on the town.  Selection as to the type of jewelry to wear is critical, for this dress by itself is already heavily bejeweled in sequins.

Sparkle Attracts

This dress simmers all by itself and is likely to turn heads all night on any dance floor here in SL. So, (with that in my mind) it doesn’t require much since it is already bursting with lots of bling.

If you're wearing a multicolored sequined dress like this

you're obviously not going for that subtle look anyway. Ha!

But be mindful that a multicolored sequined dress look such as this is already eye-catching to begin.

That said, you don't need to carry that extravagance completely over into your jewelry. Try and balance out your look while at once letting that sequined frock you've  adorned steal the show.

To Bling or Not to Bling? – That is the Question

I recommend that you try using refined jewelry with clean lines like simple metallics or dainty jewelry that best complements the backdrop of this type of dress without  competing with it.

First, you might try adding just a touch of elegant yet subtle sparkle. Remember that “Less is More” when it comes to accessorizing this type of dress. So, keep your bracelet, earrings and necklace low key.

You can add jewels but don’t over-embellish or exaggerate. You're already going to look like a jewel in that sequined dress.

As I mentioned, the key is not to go overboard with heavy sparkly jewelry. Too much and you will end up looking like a Vegas Strip showgirl. Slide on some nice gloves perhaps, add a sparkly ring, and perhaps earrings paired to a matching gem necklace to add some additional shine if you want.

Colored Pieces

Choose the color of your jewelry to play upon the colors in this super-glam dress. For example, this sequined dress has highlights of magenta - so I played off this particular color by picking sparkly amethyst gems in concert with black onyx in small clustered gems - but again, I didn’t go too big.

Going With the Right Shoes

Let's face it, when you're wearing a multicolored sequined dress like this, your dress is the jewelry. That said, you should also play down the shoes you decide upon.

Since you're exploding in sequins anyway, you definitely won't have to worry about looking plain with these shoes. I paired my footwear to match the shoulder strap design  with non-metallic, leather strapped heels.

The same concept applies to my hair and my makeup as well. I kept my do simple and wore a clean pillbox hat for an added touch. I went with blue-grey smoked eyeshadow to complement both the pillbox hat and blue-grey gloves.

When you're wearing a showstopper of a dress like this sensational "Karen in Sparkling Blue," you really can't go wrong by keeping the rest of your look clean and simple.
